After First Lady Jill Biden caught COVID for the second time, the White House announced that Joe would be masking up again indoors, though he didnāt appear to get the memo.
Shortly after, Biden presented retired Army Captain Larry Taylor with the Medal of Honor while maskless, and then bizarrely exited the East Room of the White House before the conclusion of the ceremony.
When questioned about this, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre offered the hilarious excuse that "The president took off his mask, as I said he would, to deliver incredibly powerful remarks about this captain, Capt. Taylor, and what he did in service to our nation.ā
Later in the day, Biden joked after entering the White House State Dining Room without a mask; āIāve been tested again today and Iām clear across the board. But they keep telling me because it has to be 10 days or something, I gotta keep wearing it. But donāt tell them I didnāt have it on when I walked in.ā
On Bidenās first day as President, he signed 17 executive orders, among them being a mandate that all people on federal property wear masks to slow the spread of COVID. Biden and his family were spotted maskless at the Lincoln Memorial later that day.
Meanwhile, a study published earlier this year in the highly regarded Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews reviewed 78 randomized, controlled trials, six of which were conducted during the COVID pandemic, to determine if N95 masks reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses, and found that āCompared with wearing no mask in community studies only, wearing a mask may make little to no difference in how many people caught a fluālike illness/COVIDālike illness.ā
