The Biden administration is pushing for the restoration of felon voting rights in the latest attempt to boost his odds in the 2024 election. While once only relying on the dead for votes, Democrats are now turning to ex-felons for help.
According to the Daily Signal:
A federal agency is working with left-of-center nonprofits to increase voting among prisoners and former prison inmates under an executive order from President Joe Biden designed to increase election turnout.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has partnered with and regularly consults on voting issues with the League of Women Voters, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Campaign Legal Center, and the Washington Lawyersâ Committee.
The partnerships result from Bidenâs Executive Order 14019, signed in March 2021, which calls for âsoliciting and facilitating approved, nonpartisan third-party organizations and State officials to provide voter registration services on agency premisesâ to promote voting across the nation.
The reason for this, of course, is because the evidence suggests ex-felons would overwhelmingly vote Democrat if allowed, and states where felons can already vote proves as much. Even without research into the topic, the fact that only Democrats are pushing this suggests the same.
The Washington Examinerâs Paul Bedard noted a UPenn survey which found that âin some states, felons register Democratic by more than six-to-one. In New York, for example, 61.5 percent of convicts are Democrats, just 9 percent Republican. They also cited a study that found 73 percent of convicts who turn out for presidential elections would vote Democrat.â
In New York the ratio was 61.5% Democrat, and 9% registering Republican. In New Mexico itâs 51.9%/10.2%, and in North Carolina, 54.6%/10.2%. Felons can vote in all three states with differing conditions.
A different study from researchers at Northwestern University came to a similar conclusion, estimating that Democrats received 7 out of every 10 votes in 14 of the last Senate election years (the study is from 2003). The study also found that allowing all felons to vote wouldâve allowed Democrats to win 7 extra Senate races from 1978, which may seem small, but as the studyâs authors note, small majorities matter. In the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, the victor was determined by razor thin margins in swing states - which felons undoubtedly would have the ability to push in Bidenâs favor.
Lastly, a more recent study from 2019 found that incarcerated felons are three times more likely to be Democrats than Republicans.
