Karine Jean-Pierre attempted to deny for nearly three minutes that the $700 billion Schumer-Manchin climate change and tax package will break Joe Biden's promise on tax hikes.

“He promised it wasn’t going to raise taxes on anybody making less than $400k a year, but the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) says that is not true,” Doocy said, citing a recent analysis which found that the bill would increase taxes by $16.7 billion on earners making below $200k in 2023, and another $14.1 billion on taxpayers making between $200k and 500k.

“Well, that is incorrect,” Jean-Pierre said, before Doocy interjected “So, the Joint Committee on Taxation, which you guys heralded as an effective body when you were selling the infrastructure package, is not to be trusted here?”

While on the campaign trail, Joe Biden promised that no Americans earning below $400,000 would see a tax increase under his administration. When Biden began proposing tax hikes that would violate that promise in the early days of his presidency, in March 2021 Jen Psaki tried to spin the promise as applying to "household income" not individual income. No one bought that excuse, and it's interesting to note that Jean-Pierre made no attempt to lower the "400k" threshold in her denial that he'd raise taxes on anyone below it.
