The decision of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to give out laptops, iPads, and other electronic devices to students in the pandemic-era in a city never known for enforcing the law has gone exactly as you’d expect.

According to the Daily Caller’s Juliana Frieman:

Chicago schools are reportedly missing about $23 million in laptops, iPads and other electronic devices.

The 77,505 disappearing devices were reportedly lost or stolen “without search or recovery efforts” during the 2021-22 educational year at Chicago Public Schools annual report from the district’s Inspector General for the 2023 fiscal year revealed.

When switching to remote learning, a total of $165 million was spent on these sorts of devices, meaning that nearly a sixth of all devices went missing or were stolen.

The amount of electronics missing was “unacceptably high” and in need of “serious overhaul,” the report said. This was the first time the district took inventory of material since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At three dozen schools, 100 percent of tech devices assigned specifically to students were marked lost or stolen, inventory data showed,” the report stated.

Amazingly, CPS did invest $3 million in tracking software to locate lost and stolen items, but rarely uses it to find them

The CPS annual report reviewed over 2,000 complaints of misconduct, waste, fraud, and financial mismanagement, and other cases included an assistant principal charged after allegedly stealing nearly $275,000, and numerous employees accused of Paycheck Protection Program loan fraud.
