Senator Ted Cruz smoked the reporters over at Bloomberg while slamming Joe Biden for giving billions to the Iranian regime.
“Right now, Joe Biden is asking for $24 billion to go to Ukraine to fight the war, but simultaneously they’re announcing they’re sending $16 billion to Iran,” Cruz said to “Balance of Power” co-hosts Joe Mathieu and Annmarie Hordern. “Iran is using that money to make drones, and those drones are going to Russia and Russia is using those drones to kill Ukrainians, so the Biden administration is funding both sides of the war.”
Hordern attempted to debunk Cruz, quoting the amount released to Iran as “only” $6 billion. “Well Senator. Senator. It’s not $16 billion, it's $6 billion, and it’s Iranian funds that were in South Korea” before rattling off a number of unrelated talking points.
But as Cruz pointed out, he was speaking about the total amount Biden has given to Iran, not just the additional $6 billion they got this week in exchange for five freed Americans. “There’s a number you said that was incorrect. Number one; you’re correct that the number they announced this week was $6 billion to exchange for five hostages, but that follows two weeks after they released $10 billion that came from Iraq to Iran. So in total it’s $16 billion that has flowed into the Ayatollah's coffers.”
While not as widely reported on as the “$6 billion” figure, that $16 billion in total would be flowing to Iran was also reported on. For instance, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies reported last month that “The United States moved toward giving Iran access to at least $16 billion in the last few weeks, including $6 billion held in South Korea as part of a prisoner exchange deal and $10 billion held in Iraq to pay off Baghdad’s debts for its purchases of Iranian natural gas.”
Cruz added “It is a bizarre political obsession of the Biden White House to want to send him tens of billions of dollars,” after noting the regime’s regular “Death to America chants.” “It is a 100% certainty that this money that they’re sending to Iran will be used to fund terrorism to kill Americans.”
