District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser was absolutely perplexed by the consequences of her own actions while bemoaning the police shortage her city faces amid record levels of crime.
DC’s homicide total exceeded 200 before October of this year for the first time in a quarter-century, and as many young kids and teenagers have been killed this year (with three months to go) as have been killed in all of 2022.
“We need more officers,” Mayor Bowser said at a press conference. “We need more officers, and sadly, we lost three to four hundred officers in the past four years. We haven’t had officers in our schools, and we have policies that make it difficult to recruit new officers!”
Bowser finding the culprit here is as simple as purchasing a mirror.
Following the death of George Floyd, Bowser unveiled a massive “Black Lives Matter” mural, which activists later altered to read “Black Lives Matter = Defund the Police,” and it remained that way for months until the mural was eventually removed. DC Public Works only made an effort to change the equal sign on the altered message to the DC Flag (which has an equal sign in it), indicating they agreed with it.
That came after the DC City Council passed a budget that they championed for cutting $15 million from the DC police budget, of which a net $14 million in cuts from the year prior materialized.
