According to a new report, Democrats are increasingly concerned that Biden making the issue he polls the worst on, economics, the foundation of the re-election campaign, is backfiring.
This comes as Gallup finds that Republicans have the biggest lead on the economy vs. Democrats since 1991.
According to Axios:
Some prominent Democrats are now openly criticizing the Biden campaign's strategy, arguing that it appears to be in denial of Americans' economic reality.
"We have to do a better job framing this not so much for one person â for the office of the presidency â but for the people," Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.) told Politico. "I've never understood why you would brand an economy in your name when the economy hasn't fully recovered yet," Michael LaRosa, a former spokesman for Jill Biden, told the publication.
"Whatever stories Americans are told about the strength of the economy under President Joe Biden, they are not going to be persuaded to look past the issue of their own living standards," liberal economist James Galbraith wrote.
In the most recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, Biden was underwater by 19 points, and would lose 51-42 in a head-to-head against Donald Trump. While reporting on their poll on ABCâs This Week, Rich Klein reported that âthis is perhaps the most startling result of our poll, the hypothetical rematch of Trump vs. Biden, our poll with the Washington Post pegs this at 51% against Bidenâs 42%, giving Trump a nine point edge.â This lead is far outside the pollâs margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
He then attempted to downplay their own poll, noting that; âit is significantly different from most recent polls. It is an outlier than most polls recently,â pointing to the polling average from FiveThirtyEight showing a much closer race with Biden 1.9 points ahead.
However, a separate aggregate of polls from Real Clear Politics has Trump leading Biden by 1.6 points. The only polls showing Biden leading in their sample are from Rasmussen Reports, Economist/YouGov, and Quinnipiac, who all have Biden leading by one point. Of note, Quinnipiacâs polling overestimated Bidenâs support by 6.5 percentage points in 2020, while Economist/YouGov overestimated his support by 2.7 percentage points vs. the final âofficialâ results.
