In what historians believe may be the first documented case of a Biden press secretary telling the truth, Karine Jean-Pierre admitted that there are real concerns about inflation “coming back” (or more accurately, going back to their prior highs), and acknowledged that more needed to be done about the problem.
As the Washington Examiner reported:
The White House conceded it was concerned inflation will continue to cost consumers for a while longer. “We have concerns, basically,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday. “We certainly look at trends, that is something that we do here, and not read too much into data from one month. That is how we operate here and others do as well.”
“But we certainly understand that there’s more work to be done to lower costs,” she said. “That is something that we are aware of.”
Prices are still too high,” Jean-Pierre said. “We’re going to do everything that we can to lower costs.”
She then tried to claim that they had successes when it came to junk fees, healthcare, and passing the Inflation Reduction Act.
Presumably her concerns are about how inflation affects Biden’s reelection odds, and not the American consumer.

She is partially correct in that consumers have saved $2 billion since 2021 due to the administration’s crackdown on late fees according to the White House, but this amounts to roughly $6 in savings per American. So Jean-Pierre is right that the administration has reduced late fees significantly, but it pales in comparison to the extra $11,400 Americans need to spend to maintain the same standard of living as when Biden took office.
Meanwhile, the average cost of employer-sponsored health insurance rose from $7,911 in 2022 to $8,435 in 2023.
