May 2024 Trial Date Set for Trump Classified Docs Case - Months Before Election Day

A date has been set for Donald Trump’s classified documents case, and it’s May 20, 2024, fewer than six months before election day. 

According to the Post Millennial: 

Judge Aileen Cannon has set a trial date in the Biden DOJ's case against President Donald Trump for May 20, 2024. This is months after the DOJ's requested start date in December 2023, and months ahead of Trump's attorney's requested start date in late November 2024.

Cannon heard from the prosecution and the defense on Tuesday, and expressed skepticism with the Justice Department's accelerated proposed trial timeline. She noted that in addition to the many documents to review, some 1.1 million pages, and the 9 months of surveillance tapes. At the time, she said she would issue a ruling on the timeline “promptly.”

The May 20 date means it’ll take place near the end of the Republican presidential primaries, which Trump leads by an overwhelming margin. The Republican National Convention, where the nominee is formally selected, begins on July 15th. 

Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, picked a start date in the middle of what both parties requested. Prosecutors sought to begin trial in December of this year, while Trump’s defense team sought to have it postponed until after the election. Interestingly, while this ruling is hardly ideal for Trump, Judge Cannon has previously faced venom from liberals over prior rulings of hers favorable to Trump, and the New York Times called into question her ability to preside over the case because of that.

This is just one case in an onslaught against Trump ahead of the next election, which anyone with eyes can see as designed solely to keep him out of the White House. Trump also faces his New York “hush money” trial in March 2024, and more trial dates could come in Georgia and Jack Smith’s other probe.
