A humiliated New York Governor Kathy Hochul attempted damage control after being confronted at the wake of the fallen NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller on Friday.
In a video that went viral over the weekend, a man is seen confronting Hochul at officer Diller’s wake, leading to her walking away as some mourners applauded. Someone had reportedly shouted “get her outta here!” when she first arrived, and a Diller family member told Hochul to her face “We don’t want you here. You’re not wanted here. You have blood on your hands. If you want to do something, change the bail laws.”
She should’ve already known that she wasn’t wanted there - as both Hochul and corrupt Attorney General Letitia James tried to get invitations to speak Diller’s funeral, and were flat-out rejected by Diller’s family. The NYPD sergeants’ union also warned anti-cop New York City Councilmembers against attending the wake and funeral.
Hochul attempted to save face the following day, claiming she was just trying to do the right thing. “People will do what they’re going to do for their own reasons, and I will remain convinced that it was the right thing to do. I would do it again, and that’s my job. My job is to be there when people need me. If they need to talk to me, and they all needed to talk to me, my job is to listen,” she said of her (briefly) attending the wake. Despite her rhetoric about simply wanting to “be there to listen,” Hochul didn’t attend the funeral the following day on Sunday.
In making it clear that her entire goal all along was to try to politicize Diller’s death, Hochul then joined Al Sharpton to try to claim that she’s actually a tough-on-crime governor, the evidence for which has yet to be seen.
When it comes to career criminals being released over-and-over again, rather than call for actual bail reform (i.e. enforcing bail), Hochul has instead blamed judges for “misunderstanding bail laws.”
In her most recent budget proposal for the state, five more prisons will be closed.
