While all eyes were on the John Fetterman trainwreck last night, New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced off against Republican challenger Lee Zeldin.

Among the things we learned from that debate is that to Hochul, why people are concerned with crime is one of the great mysteries of modern life.

During the debate Hochul dismissed surging crime, particularly in New York City where murders are up 15.2% last year (after spiking by a historic amount the year before), as a "few high-profile incidents." Data from NYC (which is where about 4 in 10 of New York's residents live) also showed a 23% increase in burglary and 22% in grand larceny last month compared to last year.

At one point Zeldin knocked her soft-on-crime stances, pointing out that not once in the debate did Hochul do as much as express interest in putting criminals behind bars (which, given the state's insane bail reform, has become a challenge). In response, Hochul replied "Anyone who commits a crime, under our laws, especially with the changes made to bail, has consequences. I don't know why that's so important to you."
