After years of being ignored in response to requests for documents on the U.S. funding gain-of-function research, Senator Rand Paul is going to block all of President Biden’s nominees for the National Institute of Health.
Sen. Paul has been requesting these documents because they’ll shine light on whether our own government played a role in the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For several years now I’ve been requesting unclassified records from HHS and from NIH on gain of function research. The FBI has concluded as has the Department of Energy that the virus originated in a lab in wuhan. Yesterday, they revealed the names of three scientists, one of which they believe was patient zero, the first person to get COVID, indicating that the pandemic started in the lab,” Paul said at a Senate Health executive session.
Paul went on to say that until he has better luck at obtaining these records or having any kind of letters to help him get the material, he’ll be blocking all Biden nominees to the NIH, and opposing unanimous consent for any bills out of the committee.
Earlier in the month, Rand Paul explained to Maria Bartiromo that he’d be blocking nominations and legislation in other committees too. “I’m in the process of blocking nominations, of blocking legislation, if they will not help me to get records. And so this is going on in two major committees that I’m on: the Foreign Relations Committee as well as Homeland Security. I’m telling you, I’m not letting anything pass unanimously, I’m blocking everything until you finally turn over some of these records on COVID.”
