On Thursday, President Joe Biden participated in what the media has declared was the “most high-stakes news conference of his political career.” The NATO summit press conference had the power to either fuel or quell calls for a cognitively declining Biden to bow out of the 2024 presidential race. According to critics, it didn’t go well, but it wasn’t a total train wreck.
Before his consequential presser at the NATO summit officially began, Biden referred to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.” Then, during his first line of questioning, Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as former President Donald Trump.

At about the halfway mark, the president suddenly raised his voice and started awkwardly yelling at his audience about gun control. At other various points, he lost his train of thought, bizarrely trailing off and ending his answer with an “anyway.” There was lots of mumbling and coughing throughout.
However, the event, jokingly dubbed the president’s “proof of life” press conference, received mixed reactions. Biden’s campaign team declared it a triumph. Left-wing corporate media analysts claimed the president demonstrated a command of foreign policy.
Even still, following the conference, several Democratic congressmen joined the growing list of senators and representatives who are urging Biden to drop out of the race. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez even suggested the president should resign before finishing his term.
Right-wing commentators such as The Federalist’s Sean Davis believe Biden’s performance was just good enough to keep him in the race — which is great news for Trump.
“That press conference was bad enough to keep everyone talking about Joe Biden’s pudding brain for another week, but not bad enough to force him out of the White House,” Davis wrote on X. “In other words: it was perfect, if you want Biden and the Democrats to lose in November.”
