AOC Dismisses Skyrocketing Violent Crime as “Hysteria”

Against the backdrop of the “defund the police” movement gaining steam and having local successes, 2020 became an unusually violent year.

A report from the Council on Criminal Justice found a 30% increase in homicide rates in 2020 based on an analysis of data from just 34 U.S. cities, and in many cities the number of shootings doubled.

In the face of that carnage, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is spearheading a new strategy of dealing with the problem by ignoring it entirely.

According to Fox News:

AOC expressed concern that recent headlines referring to spikes in crime across U.S. cities are stirring up “hysteria.”

“We are seeing these headlines about percentage increases,” AOC said during a conversation with New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman over Zoom. “Now, I want to say that any amount of harm is unacceptable and too much, but I also want to make sure that this hysteria, you know, that this doesn’t drive a hysteria and that we look at these numbers in context so that we can make responsible decisions about what to allocate in that context.”

AOC argued earlier in June that authorities should stop building prisons and instead focus on underlying public health issues, adding it is “not acceptable” to use jails as “garbage bins.”

“If we want to reduce violent crime, if we want to reduce the number of people in our jails, the answer is to stop building more of them,” AOC said.

Meanwhile, AOC claims to be attending therapy due to the “trauma” she experienced during the mostly peaceful protests on January 6th. The trauma involved her hiding while being protected by a Capitol police officer who she later criticized for looking at her the wrong way.

Left-leaning journalist Glenn Greenwald pointed out that AOC has herself been hypocritically hysterical on the issue of crime, as just months ago she accused Senator Ted Cruz of trying to have her murdered.

She’s hysterical over non-existent crimes, but is concerned over “hysteria” over actual crimes. Shooting incidents are up 53% year-to-date in her city, and murders are up 13.3% (relative to an already especially violent 2020).
