AOC Wrongly Claims That the Black Panthers Invented School Lunch Programs
On Wednesday, socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrongly claimed that the radical Black Panther Party was responsible for the founding of free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs in public schools.
The Washington Free Beacon reports that AOC posted a picture to Instagram saying that Black Panthers’ Free Breakfast for School Children Program, which began in 1969, created pressure that eventually led to the School Breakfast Program becoming permanently authorized by the federal government in 1975, according to an article from the History channel that AOC linked to in a subsequent tweet.

However, as the Free Beacon notes, federal programs for students to be given breakfast and lunch began many years before the Black Panthers started their program. In 1946, under President Harry Truman, the National School Lunch Program, providing free or reduced-price lunches to poor students, began. As well, the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 gave the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the authority to federally fund student breakfasts at public schools.
It would behoove AOC to research more before giving incorrect information to her millions of followers.
