Atlanta Mayor Blames End of Lockdowns for Her City’s Crime Wave

Crime is on the rise in America’s Democrat-run cities, and Democrats are offering contradictory excuses as to why.

New York suffered an epic violent crime wave in 2020, with the number of shootings nearly doubling and the number of homicides surging 44%. That came amid $1 billion being cut from the NYPD. As for the cause of the crime wave, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed the lockdown economy that people like her helped create, claiming that the crime wave merely amounted to people feeling the need to “shoplift some bread.”

Meanwhile in Atlanta (which sequestered $73 million from their police budget last year), we’re “learning” from their Mayor that the reason for her city’s crime wave wasn’t lockdowns, but rather the state of Georgia reopening, which she blames on Republicans.

Homicides surged 58% in Atlanta in 2020, making it the most deadly year for the city in over two decades.

In both New York City and Atlanta, their crime surges are continuing into 2021.

From The Post Millennial:

Democrat Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is claiming that the spike in the city’s crime rates can be blamed on the early easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Georgia by the statehouse GOP.

Bottoms said that the city is “doing every single thing we can” to tackle the rising crime, adding that leadership is helping by getting young people into summer jobs.

“We’re getting at least 1,000 young people to work this summer. That will help until we deal with systemic issues of the gun violence epidemic in this country – how easily young people, people with mental illness can access guns in this country,” said Bottoms, also claiming that rising crime can felt all over the nation.

While it is true that her city’s crime wave is continuing as lockdowns eased – they started during lockdowns at the height of the “defund the police” hysteria – hysteria that Mayor Bottoms was happy to bolster.

If Bottoms wants to blame guns for her city’s ills, she needs an explanation for why states with extremely lax gun control laws like those in the midwest have such low homicide and overall crime rates while a city like hers with extremely strict gun laws is so violent. One obvious difference would be their leadership.
