Irony reached new heights yesterday evening as Canada’s authoritarian leader Justin Trudeau pledged to take a stand against authoritarianism.

In announcing Canada’s first round of sanctions against in response to Vladimir Putin recognizing the independence of Ukraine’s breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, Trudeau commented “Canada and our allies will defend democracy. We are taking these actions today, to stand against authoritarianism.”

Watch below:

Trudeau said his government will ban Canadians from all financial dealings with Donetsk and Luhansk, and Canadians will be banned from purchasing Russia’s sovereign debt. Trudeau also said he’s sanctioning members of Russian parliament who voted to recognize the aforementioned regions as independent, and is authorizing additional deployment of up to 460 troops to the region.

Trudeau’s stand against authoritarianism comes as he invoked and Canadian parliament extended the 1988 Emergencies Act (which had never been used before) over two weeks into the “Freedom Convoy” trucker protests. Among the powers granted to Trudeau by the Act included allowing his government to freeze the bank accounts of Convoy’s participants and supporters. Canadian police also arrested hundreds of peaceful protesters and towed their vehicles.

The Emergencies Act was not invoked when Canadian air space was shut down on September 11th, 2001, when hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility for taking down government websites, including that of the  Canadian Security Intelligence Service, or when there were shootings inside Canadian parliament in 2014.
