There’s mixed messaging coming out of the White House when it comes to a Joe Biden 2024 run.

In response to doubts that Biden would run again, White House Press Propagandist Jen Psaki said at a briefing earlier this month “The White House’s message is: We’re focused right now on what the American people elected the President to do … just over a year ago, which is to get COVID under control, to put people back to work, and to help give people some breathing room, and we hope other people keep their focus on that as well.”

When asked if people should “knock it off” with the speculation of him not running again, Psaki replied “The President has every intention of running for reelection, so that’s the other message for them.”

When I reported on her comments, I added the obvious disclaimer “Then again, this is coming from Jen Psaki, so her answer could mean anything” – and Biden has since circled back to offer a slightly contradictory take.

In a recent interview with ABC, Biden was asked “You said you would absolutely serve eight years if elected. Do you plan to run for reelection?” The framing isn’t entirely accurate, as in December 2019 Biden signaled he’d only serve a single term if elected (but he did later contradict that).

Biden replied “yes,” with the caveat “But look, I’m a great respecter of fate. Fate has intervened in my life many, many times. If I’m in the health I’m in now, if I’m in good health, then in fact I would run again.” He then smiled at the prospect of a rematch with Donald Trump, and said that would make him more likely to run again.
