Joe Biden delivered an address on gun control last night, calling for bringing back the 1994 assault weapons ban, a national red flag law, and more as he reiterated his belief that the Second Amendment “is not absolute.”
“Why in God’s name, should an ordinary citizen be able to purchase an assault weapon that holds 30 round magazines, that let mass shooters fire hundreds of bullets in a matter of minutes,” said Biden, calling for restrictions on magazines too.
“I also believe we should have safe storage laws and personal liability for not locking up your gun,” Biden added.
He continued on to call for national red flag laws. “We should also have national red flag laws so that a parent, a teacher, a counselor can flag for a court that a child, a student, a patient is exhibiting violent tendencies, threatening classmates, or experiencing suicidal thoughts, makes them a danger to themselves or to others,” noting that 19 states already have such laws while not noting any unintended consequences of those laws.
Biden then called for repealing the “liability shield” that gun manufacturers have (which must be news to Remington, which recently settled with Sandy Hook families for $73 million).
Often overlooked is that restrictions on magazine sizes is a backdoor gun control tactic to effectively ban guns that only function with those magazine sizes. In a memorable exchange during a hearing on the so-called Protecting Our Kids Act,” Rep. Greg Steube explained that he owns a number of handguns that would be effectively banned.
“Don’t let them fool you that they’re not attempting to take away your ability to purchase handguns,” Steube said. “They are using the magazine ban to do it.” (The bill in its current form would grandfather in existing magazine, but it would effectively ban these sort of guns for everyone else).
