Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the DOJ will being filing suit against Texas, alleging that their redistricting maps violate the Voting Rights Act.

According to Fox News:

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Texas over its newly drawn congressional and state legislature maps.

“The department’s career voting law experts have assessed Texas’s new redistricting plans and determined that they include districts that violate the Voting Rights Act,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a press conference announcing the lawsuit.

The lawsuit comes just weeks after the DOJ sued Texas over a separate voting law, SB 1, which bans 24-hour polling locations and increases ID requirements.

The DOJ also sued Texas in September over the state’s new law outlawing abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Garland also also highlighted recent actions taken by the DOJ in Arizona and Florida on “voting rights.”

Of course, if it’s gerrymandering he’s after, there’s plenty of blue states AG Garland and the DOJ missed, such as Illinois and Maryland.

The map advanced by the Maryland Legislative Redistricting Advisory Commission makes the state’s only Republican district a toss-up, and the Princeton Gerrymandering Project rated it an F.

Texas and Illinois also got F ratings., yet only Texas has drawn the DOJ’s wrath.
