Hawk Newsome, a co-founder of Black Lives Matter in New York, shouted, "We need some Black vigilantes," on Monday following the verdict in the Daniel Penny case. "People want to jump up and choke us and kill us for being loud," added the activist. “How about we do the same when they attempt to oppress us?"

Newsome continued, "I’m tired. I know you’re looking for us to be like, ‘Oh, go and march. Go and march.’ No, this weekend, I want you to hold a community event, everywhere from the Bronx, to Houston, to Seattle, to Florida. Black people hold community events and talk about what you need."

Protesters who supported Jordan Neely gathered outside the courtroom alongside Newsome before and after the verdict, chanting, "No justice, no peace," and warning that the public "will hear [them] tonight."

Back in May 2023, Subway passengers who witnessed Penny restraining Jordan Neely, a black, drug-addicted schizophrenic, said that Penny had acted to protect others. They described Neely as behaving erratically, screaming at commuters, throwing his jacket on the ground, and expressing indifference about going to jail. Despite protests and calls for violence from activists like Newsome, a Manhattan jury found Penny not guilty of criminally negligent homicide.
