Chief Justice John Roberts issued a strong rebuke of New York Senator Chuck Schumer (D) after the lawmaker made threatening comments towards Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch earlier today.
Roberts said in a statement to Fox News:
“This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside. Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that ‘You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.'”
“Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.”
At the rally Schumer said,”I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh: You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Townhall.com points out that the Supreme Court was hearing arguments today about a Louisiana law which requires abortion doctors to have admitting privileges to local hospitals: Pro-life proponents of the law, which is sponsored by Democratic Louisiana State Senator Katrina Jackson, argue this requirement protects women with emergency medical care in case of abortion complications. Pro-abortion advocates argue the law is simply a way to make it more difficult for women seeking abortions to obtain them from providers.
Jackson told Fox News in January that her bill should unite Democrats and Republicans in the interest of protecting women.
“It’s really a pro-women’s health bill because I’m not going to ignore those women,” she said. “I’m not going to ignore their health care needs.”
Schumer’s office responded with a comment to Fox News regarding the “price” the justices would pay: “It’s a reference to the political price [Republicans] will pay for putting them on the court and a warning that the justices will unleash a major grassroots movement on the issue of reproductive rights against the decision,” stated the Senator’s office.
