United States President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron just held a joint news conference at the closing of the G7 summit. Macron spoke first and said they will release a one-page statement on what was discussed at the summit. We also learned that the United States will hold the G7 summit next year.

As far as Iran is concerned, Macron said “we agree that Iran needs to comply with its nuclear obligations and have responsible obligation in the gulf and work with us. Iran should never have a nuclear weapon.”

Macron stated that Iran has said they are ready to meet with any world leader. As far as trade is concerned, the French President insisted “we can say our discussions have clarified what is legitimate and what the United States feels is an unfair situation.”

Macron continued that we have international rules that govern international trade. But admitted that so far this has not been very efficient in solving problems or protecting intellectual properties of our industries. He said we do want to revamp the rules that govern international trade and confirmed that “the international tax system definitely needs to be modernized.”

Trump spoke second and began by thanking President Macron and his wife for their hospitality: “more than anything I wanted to come up here to say thank you to President Macron and his wife, for the tremendous success and a great job Macron did. Nobody wanted to leave, we were accomplishing a lot.“

The two leaders then took questions from the audience. One reporter asked Trump if he believed that China was sincere in their remarks or if they had no intentions to change their stance, but just had interest in calming the markets? Trump responded that “they do, they really do want to come to agreements.” Trump exclaimed that “the vice chairman of China came out and said he wants to see a deal made. China has taken a very hard hit over the last couple of months…they very much want to make a deal and the longer they wait the harder it is to put back together. “

Trump also said that President Xi is a great leader who happens to be a brilliant man and he can’t lose 3 million jobs. “I think they want to make a deal and I’m not sure they have a choice” Trump said.

Trump was asked about Iran and he responded that “Iran is a country that is not the same country that it was two and a half years ago when I came to office. It was the number one place of terrorism…with that being said, Iran is a country of tremendous potential. We are not looking for leadership change, that kind of change doesn’t work. I believe Iran can be a great nation, I’d like to see that happen, but they can’t have nuclear weapons. They have to be good players and they can’t do what they were saying they were going to do because they would be met with very violent force.”
