Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is using the recent tragedy in Uvalde Texas as an excuse to push gun control in his country.
Last night he announced that his government is introducing legislation to implement a “national freeze on handgun ownership.” “What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” Trudeau explained. “We recognize that the vast majority of gun owners use them safely and in accordance with the law, but other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives.”
Later, Canadian Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino added there would be a “mandatory buyback” program for “assault-style weapons” if the bill passes, calling it Canada’s “most significant action on gun violence in a generation.” Trudeau previously announced a ban on 1,500 types of “assault style” firearms in 2020, which revealed that the term “assault-style” had no legal definition in Canada.
Lastly, Trudeau’s legislation will create new red flag laws to allow courts to both remove guns and suspend licenses of those they deem pose a threat to themselves or others, and magazine sizes will be limited to five rounds.
Meanwhile in America, Biden has turned to bullet control while calling for Congress to offer up bipartisan gun legislation. “They said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out — may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” Biden said, further demonstrating that he has no idea what he’s talking about.
“So, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is… there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting. Remember, the Constitution was never absolute.”
Previously Biden had seemingly called for banning 9mm pistols too. During a presidential townhall event in 2021 Biden said “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous. I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.”

The “fact checkers” were quick to play defense for Biden after that remark, with PolitiFact rating the claim that Biden wants to ban handguns “false” because he “only” wanted to ban 9mm pistols, and that would mean most handguns are still legal. And as if that fact check isn’t pointless enough, a year earlier in 2020, PolitiFact rated it false that Biden wanted to ban 9mm pistols, further proving that they, like Biden, have no idea what they’re talking about.
