CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten recently unpacked how former President Donald Trump has fundamentally reshaped the American electorate, with the Republican Party’s voter base now larger than that of Democrats.
Enten explained how party identification (different from party registration) changed over the past three presidential cycles.
“So Donald Trump and the Republicans have remade the electorate. They’ve turned some people over from being Democrats or independents to become Republicans. New folks have entered the electorate who are more Republican-leaning,” Enten said, explaining how Democrats had a 5 point advantage in party affiliation in February 2017, a 6 point lead in 2021 - and now a 2 point deficit, for an eight point shift.
