Dem Senator Called Out by Jake Tapper After He Says Filibuster Is Abused by GOP

Surprisingly, CNN’s Jake Tapper seemed to take a skeptical view of Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal’s call to get rid of the filibuster in the Senate. Blumenthal spent most of his time repeating the words “dark money” (Which probably polled well) and essentially making the argument that the filibuster had to go because of the Republican “overuse, abuse, and misuse” of the filibuster. However, as Tapper said:

“Senator, haven’t you voted in favor of filibustering Republican legislation, not allowing them to even proceed to a discussion, an amendment process, and debate on a bill? …You’re talking about it being corrupt, but you’ve used it, too.”

As a matter of fact, although Democrats treat this like ancient history, Democrats used the filibuster an awful lot when Donald Trump was in office.

Here’s the simple reality of politics in 2021 that few people talk about. The Left has become so radical that there is no common ground. When your agenda is men are women, white people are evil, we can spend as much as we want forever, fascism is fine when we do it, America is bad and the Founding Fathers are horrible, where are the opportunities for bipartisanship? On top of that, the American people generally seem to hate both parties, so do you know what happens when one side blocks everything the other side does? The American people reward them by putting them back in power. The incentives are heavily slanted towards gridlock and so, that’s what we’re getting.

It’s worth noting that gridlock is not an ideal alternative, but getting rid of the filibuster for legislation would be far worse. At best, it would lead to radical legislative shifts, and at worst (which would be more likely), it would lead to one side or the other rigging the election rules to keep the other side out of power, which would lead to the break-up of the country and perhaps even a Civil War. Mediocrities like Blumenthal that advocate this kind of thing are like children playing with dynamite and we can only hope they don’t blow the rest of us up in the process.
