Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings issued a subpoena today in the Ukraine matter.
The subpoena was issued to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today. The letter began, “Pursuant to the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry, we are hereby transmitting a subpoena that compels you to produce the documents set forth in the accompanying schedule by October 4, 2019.”
The letter to Pompeo continues, “This subpoena is being issued by the Committee on Intelligence and the Committee on Oversight and Reform. The subpoenaed documents shall be part of the impeachment inquiry and shared among the Committees.”
And just what is the investigation? “The Committees are investigating the extent to which President Trump jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 election and by withholding security assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression” stated the letter.
Fascinating, considering everything released shows zero “pressing” of Ukraine, nor any type of “withholding.” Even the President of Ukraine himself told the press he felt no pressure and reiterated everything was public and everyone had “read everything” as well.
The letter again references the upcoming elections, saying, “Mr. Giuliani’s recent public statements raise more troubling questions about State Department officials’ possible involvement in the President’s efforts to press Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 U.S. election.”
The tragedy here is that no matter how many times Democrats say, or write in a subpoena, that “efforts to press” Ukraine and “interfere in the 2020 U.S. election” does not make it true. There is overwhelming evidence to support there was no pressure or anything relating to the 2020 elections.
