Failed Florida gubernatorial candidate, Democrat Andrew Gillum announced his plan yesterday to see 1 million more voters registered in the state to help stop President Trump’s chances of reelection.
Speaking to Politico, Gillum said that voter registration was critical for Democrats in Florida to flourish.
“Voter registration is red flag No. 1. “We’re looking at a target of 1 million,” he said. “We’ve got over 3 million people eligible to vote, and that’s to say nothing of the 1.4 million returning citizens”–ex-felons who have regained their voting rights after the state passed a bipartisan amendment last year.
“I’m aware of the fact that not everyone who registers votes,” Gillum said. “But if you have more marbles on the table, when some of them fall off, it’s not as consequential.”
Politico points out that Florida Democrats already plan to spend $2 million to register 200,000 voters before the 2020 election.
“Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo said the party hasn’t dedicated enough resources to registering voters in recent years. There are currently 4.96 million registered Democrats in the state, compared to 4.7 million Republicans and nearly 3.6 million voters with no party affiliation,” writes the publication.
