Artificial intelligence will soon be doing the dating for you, according to Whitney Wolfe Herd, the CEO of the popular dating app Bumble. During an interview at the Bloomberg Technology Summit in San Francisco, Herd asserted that in the future “your dating concierge,” which is your dating AI, “could go and date for you with other dating concierges.”

In response, the interviewer and audience laughed, but Herd insisted that the AI can really help people find love. “No no truly,” she said, “and then you don’t have to talk to 600 people. It will scan all of San Francisco for you and say, ‘These are the three people you really ought to meet.’”

Could AI really help you find your future spouse? It’s doubtful. Despite having access to numerous profiles, modern Americans cannot seem to find love, with marriage rates decreasing more and more every year.

People on dating apps often describe suffering from option paralysis, which is when users find themselves stuck in an endless cycle of swiping and scrolling without ever making an authentic human connection.

The digital world in general has eroded human connection. It’s easier to stay inside swiping on Tinder, watching TikTok videos, and ordering DoorDash than putting yourself out there and forging real relationships. But failing to live your life in the present is making people deeply unhappy.

Nearly half of 18- to 29-year-olds report a “constant” presence on the internet. Meanwhile, over half of 18-25-year-olds report “serious loneliness.” Turns out, having access to countless messaging boards, platforms, and dating profiles from around the globe is more isolating than social.

My advice: delete the dating apps. Contrary to what Herd would have us believe, dating apps and AI cannot forge human relationships nor can they bring you fulfillment in life. Only in-person interactions and experiences can do that.
