Senator Dianne Feinstein and 34 of her Democratic compatriots in the Senate have introduced the âAssault Weapons Ban of 2021.â The gun bill would, “ban the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. “It would also ban the manufacture and sale of some semi-automatic shotguns. The bill lists 205 “military-style assault weapons” by name, the AR-15 among them.
Weapons that have already been bought would be grandfathered in and the bill also includes a “voluntary” buyback program.
Although a companion bill has an excellent chance of passing the House, happily Republicans are likely to filibuster the bill and kill it in the Senate.
Although Democrats have never wavered in their desire to do away with the 2nd Amendment, the excuse for this bill is “domestic terrorism” and school shootings. Of course, given that “assault weapons” make-up only a tiny fraction of shooting deaths in the US, banning them seems nonsensical. “Rifles” — not all of which are “assault weapons” — only account for 4% of all shooting deaths in the United States. Shooting deaths, including school shootings, are primarily done with handguns. Unfortunately for the gun grabber crowd, an awful lot of people have and like handguns, which makes it impractical to ban them. So, this is the first step for them. You ban “assault weapons” and then, over time, you come for the handguns and shotguns.
However, it’s worth noting that we just went through a year where liberal cities called for defunding the police and deliberately allowed mobs of ANTIFA and BlackLivesMatter supporters to loot, riot, and break the law at will. If a violent mob of left-wingers shows up in your town and you are put into a position where you have no choice other than to defend yourself since the police aren’t allowed to help you, you want an AR-15. In a country where politically motivated violence and disorder are increasing while one of the two major parties seems to be increasingly lurching towards a totalitarian mindset, there are no circumstances imaginable where Republicans should cede one inch on any gun issue.
