Disney Suspends ABC Executive Over Allegations of Racist Remarks

This week, Walt Disney Co. suspended ABC News executive Barbara Fedida and launched an investigation into her behavior, after a recent HuffPost article accused her of racist remarks and “other questionable practices.”

According to MarketWatch, Fedida, ABC News’ senior vice president of talent relations and business affairs, holds incredible influence over the organization, where she negotiates contracts for the network’s top on-air talent and producers, and controls how and where resources are assigned within the news division, effecting how and which stories are covered. Fedida also holds tremendous clout within the greater TV-News business overall.

On Saturday, HuffPost accused Fedida of making a racist remark about “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts during a contract negotiation, saying that “the network wasn’t asking her to ‘pick cotton’ in response to Roberts seeking an increase in salary.”

Fedida said in a statement:

“Throughout my career, I have been a champion for increased diversity in network news. Building a news division where everyone can thrive has been my life’s mission. I am proud of my decades of work of hiring, supporting and promoting talented journalists of color. And, unlike these heartbreaking and incredibly misleading claims about me, that track record is well-documented and undeniable.”
