It was just last week that Joe Biden made his most recent push to pass gun control after a man shot six people to death in a small Mississippi community.
Among the policies Biden called for included universal background checks, banning high capacity magazines, requiring “safe storage” of guns, and opening up firearms manufacturers to face civil liability for gun violence, a movement that would single handedly end the firearms industry. Biden has also constantly rallied for bringing back the 1994 assault weapons ban.
One radical proposed gun control policy of Biden’s that has received relatively little attention is his proposed ban of 9mm pistols, which would result in a ban on most handguns.
So-called “fact-checkers” have attempted to dispute this, but they can’t keep their story straight.
In 2020, PolitiFact’s Samantha Putterman wrote an article in response to the NRA’s claim that “Joe Biden wants to ban 9mm pistols,” rating their claim “False” while herself falsely claiming that Biden was only talking about banning high-capacity magazines.
The NRA’s source for Biden’s stance was a Seattle Times story that reported, “While saying he supports the Second Amendment, Biden called the absolutist arguments of some gun-rights supporters ‘bizarre.’ Noting people can’t own machine guns or bazookas, Biden said, ‘Why should we allow people to have military-style weapons including pistols with 9-mm bullets and can hold 10 or more rounds?’”
The comment is certainly up for interpretation, and Putterman just goes off the word of Biden campaign propagandist Andrew Bates, who said that the NRA was lying about Biden’s views.
Amusingly, when the House Republicans wrote in a tweet in 2021 that “President Biden says he wanted to ban handguns,” PolitiFact’s Jon Greenberg rated the claim false, with the justification that it’s not all handguns Biden wants to ban, but only 9mm pistols that he wants to ban.
The House Republicans Twitter shared a video of Biden giving the following response to a question on gun control during a 2021 town hall: “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous. I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.”
Greenberg concludes his article:
House Republicans said Biden wants to ban handguns. That is incorrect.
Biden was talking about banning assault weapons and magazines that carry 20 to 120 rounds of ammunition. Those policies would not affect the most popular handgun models. Even if some smaller set of pistols came under such a ban, that would not translate to a ban on handguns across the board.
In reality, banning the sale of 9mm firearms would amount to criminalizing 57 percent of all handgun sales in America.
Further contradicting Putterman, in May 2022 in response to the elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, Biden made another comment on 9mm bullets that seemed to hint at supporting a ban on 9mm pistols as a whole. “‘A 22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out, may be able to…save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,’” Biden said. “So the idea that these high-caliber weapons is of—there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting…and remember, the Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute.”
Days later Karine Jean-Pierre would try to deny that Biden supported a ban on any kind of handguns, as apparently it’s also a mystery to Biden's own administration whether Biden actually supports the policies he vocally advocated for constantly over multiple years.
