Failed 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will deliver the Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement, “Stacey Abrams is a present and future leader in this country. She is a dynamic, moral leader; she delivered results on the issues that matter most to Americans; and she tirelessly pursues fairness and justice for everyone in her state.”
Abrams said she plans to “deliver a vision for prosperity and equality, where everyone in our nation has a voice and where each of those voices is heard.”
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will deliver the Spanish-language response to the State of the Union address.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cancelled the president’s original address on January 29, citing “security concerns” due to the government shutdown. This–despite the fact that both Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security contradicted her claims and stated the agencies could handle securing the event.
The speech has been rescheduled for February 5.
In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, Trump wrote, “It is my great honor to accept. We have a great story to tell and yet, great goals to achieve!”
