Flashback: Biden Describes His Own Policy as “Beyond Comprehension” in 2019

Joe Biden threatened Israel on Wednesday that he’d be halting shipments of bombs and equipment if they launched an invasion into Rafah, the last Hamas stronghold. This came after it was already revealed that the U.S. had paused shipment of bombs to Israel last week, before Israel launched its invasion of Rafah.

Even the Biden of a half-decade ago would’ve been bewildered by such a decision.

Back in November 2019, Biden said in an interview with PBS NewsHour that it would “beyond comprehension” that military aid would be withheld from Israel.

“There's news this week, to the extent that some of the Democrats are saying that, if — because of Israel's settlements policy, that they would look at cutting off military aid to Israel as a result of that” host Judy Woodruff said.

Biden replied; “I strongly oppose Israel's settlement policy on the West Bank. I have made that clear to Bibi when we were — when I was vice president. I have made it crystal clear to the Israelis. But the idea that we would cut off military aid to an ally, our only true, true ally in the entire region, is absolutely preposterous. It's just beyond my comprehension that anyone would do that.”

Biden is likely trying to desperately hold on to his support among Muslim voters, who overwhelmingly support Democrats, but risk not turning up in 2024 in protest of Biden for supporting Israel in any capacity. In Dearborn, Michigan, which has the largest Muslim population in the U.S. per-capita, Biden lost to “uncommitted” in the Michigan Democrat primary.
