Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed HB 5. That bill requires high school students to learn about ideologies that âconflict with the principles of freedom and democracy essential to the founding principles of the United Statesâ like communism and totalitarianism.
The bill also included a âPortraits and Patriotism Library” which will teach students about “real patriots” that came to Florida after fleeing Communist and Totalitarian regimes.
Today, I signed HB 5 alongside Ana Abaunza, who escaped socialist regimes. Her story spotlights the necessity of teaching our youth why we have and will continue to fight for freedom.

DeSantis added:
âItâs crucial to ensure that we teach our students how to be responsible citizens. They need to have a good working knowledge of American history, American government and the principles that underline our Constitution and Bill of Rights. ….We have a number of people in Florida, particularly southern Florida, whoâve escaped totalitarian regimes, whoâve escaped communist dictatorships to be able to come to America. We want all students to understand the difference, why would somebody flee across shark-infested waters, say leaving from Cuba to come to southern Florida. Why would somebody leave a place like Vietnam? Why would people leave these countries and risk their life to be able to come here. Itâs important students understand that.”
DeSantis is not the only excellent Republican Governor, but he is indisputably one of the best Republican Governors out there. This is a great example of why that is the case. So often, conservatives just cede education to liberals and that has been a disaster for the country. Conservatives need to get more involved in shaping what our kids are learning and one of those things should definitely be what communism and totalitarian societies are really like.
Kids should learn how people are living in China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia because then, when their Communist college professor tells them they live in an awful, terrible, oppressive country, they’re going to know better because they have already been told about what that looks like in the real world. This is exactly the sort of thing kids should be taught in schools.
