Over the weekend MSNBC’s Medhi Hasan had his intellectual equal Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on his show to discuss the House speaker race, in which the former bartender blasted Byron Donalds as unqualified.
“He’s only served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The last thing that he did in the Oversight Committee was attempt to submit falsified evidence to an impeachment hearing. I think it helps to know where all the bathrooms are before you run for the U.S. House of Representatives, personally, and I think it helps to have some real experience in one of most complex legislative bodies in the world before you try to run it.”
The “falsified evidence” AOC is referring to was a 2018 text message given by the IRS whistleblowers from James Biden (Joe’s brother) to Hunter Biden, where James wrote “This can work, you need a safe harbor. I can work with you father [sic] alone !! We as usual just need several months of his help for this to work.” While AOC did try to argue that the texts were lacking context during the impeachment hearing, there was never any doubt that the texts themselves are authentic. Additionally, her phrasing that Donalds “attempt[ed] to submit falsified evidence” makes it sound like these texts were rejected as bogus, but they were submitted into the congressional record over AOC’s objection.
Thus far, nine Republicans have joined the House speaker race after the failed bids of Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan. In addition to Donalds, Reps. Tom Emmer, Mike Johnson, Kevin Hern, Pete Sessions, Jack Bergman, Austin Scott, Daniel Meuser, and Gary Palmer have thrown their hats in the ring.
