Great News: Poll Finds Almost Everyone Knows the Media Is Biased

A new Gallup poll finds that the majority of Americans are right about something: knowing that the media is biased.

According to the Daily Caller:

86% of Americans said that the media is biased, with 49% of respondents saying that there is “a great deal” of political bias in news coverage and 37% saying there is “a fair amount” of bias, according to the poll.

I imagine the 14% who disagree must work in the media.

People are more concerned with other people’s news sources than they are with their own; when given a choice, 69% of Americans were concerned about bias in the news that other people were viewing, while 29% were concerned about the bias in their own news sources. 56% of respondents agreed that there was political bias in the news source that they relied on the most, the poll found.

The poll found that Americans are divided along party lines when it comes to trusting the media. Republicans distrust the media more than Democrats – 71% of Republicans reported viewing the media “very” or “somewhat” unfavorably, while 22% of Democrats and 52% of independents said the same.

While everyone is aware of media bias, liberals probably don’t mind it as much because it’s almost entirely in their favor. During President Trump’s first hundred days in office, 89% of network coverage of the Trump presidency was negative. For the entire year of 2018, coverage was 90% negative, and during the recent impeachment hysteria (which already feels like ancient history), media bias maxed out with 100% negative coverage.

Only about 7% of journalists of journalists are Republicans according to one survey from 2013:

Survey: 7 percent of reporters identify as Republican - POLITICO

Of note, that survey is of all journalists, not just political journalists. So sports/tech/etc journalists could be taking up the lions share of the self-identified “independents” in the industry.

And people are at least noticing what direction the bias tends to go. According to the latest from Rasmussen Reports, 67% of U.S. likely voters agree that the media is more likely to focus on policy issues when they report on Biden over his controversies, while only 41% think that the media focuses predominantly on policy when talking about Trump instead of gossip. The figures should be 100% and 0% respectively, but it’s a start.
