Historically Unpopular Biden Reportedly Confirms Plans for 2024 Re-Election Bid

Amid speculation that Joe Biden would forgo a 2024 run due to his dwindling poll numbers and clear cognitive decline, he’s going to attempt to stick around for a second term.

According to recent reporting in The Hill, Biden privately told former President Barack Obama that he’s planning on running for reelection. A source told The Hill “[Biden] wants to run and he’s clearly letting everyone know,” adding that the prospect of a Trump rematch is a motivating factor. “I believe he thinks he’s the only one who can beat Trump. I don’t think he thinks there’s anyone in the Democratic party who can beat Trump and that’s the biggest factor.”

As recently as last December there was some mixed messaging coming out of the White House when it came to Biden’s 2024 plans. In an ABC interview Biden was asked “You said you would absolutely serve eight years if elected. Do you plan to run for reelection?” The framing isn’t entirely accurate, as in December 2019 Biden signaled he’d only serve a single term if elected (though he later contradicted that).

Biden replied “yes,” with the caveat “But look, I’m a great respecter of fate. Fate has intervened in my life many, many times. If I’m in the health I’m in now, if I’m in good health, then in fact I would run again.” He then smiled at the prospect of a rematch with Donald Trump, and said that would make him more likely to run again.

Biden’s plans come as a bloodbath looms in the midterms for Democrats, with Republicans projected to handily take back control of the House, and a slight majority in the Senate. By October of last year Republicans had a 11-percentage point advantage over Democrats in voter enthusiasm, and that’s swelled to a 17-point advantage since. Meanwhile, Biden has maintained a net negative approval rating in the Rasmussen poll than any other President in the poll’s history.

With countless economic parallels between the two, Biden is also less popular than Jimmy Carter was on the economy – and we all know how the electoral map in 1980 turned out.
