House Republicans are launching an inquiry into the origin of COVID-19 and are attempting to place Dr. Anthony Fauci in the crosshairs for questioning.

Republican Whip and Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis Ranking Member Steve Scalise, House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer and Select Subcommittee Republican lawmakers will hold a forum with expert witnesses to examine the origins of COVID-19. The lawmakers will hold two witness panels and one panel with members.
These Republicans have continued to call on Democrats to investigate if the virus originated from a Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) lab as Democrats have refused to launch the investigation.
Republicans have so far compiled a list of witnesses to testify, with the first witness panel including Brett P. Giroir, former Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Republicans have also called on Fauci to take questions during the second witness panel, but so far the nation’s top infectious disease expert has yet to accept the invitation.
Republicans say they are launching the inquiry because Democrats have refused to get to the bottom of how the pandemic originated:
“Despite Speaker Pelosi’s efforts to create diversions and cover this up, the American people deserve the truth and are demanding accountability, and House Republicans will insist on getting these answers. The House Democrat majority’s refusal to follow the science, listen to the experts, and investigate the origins of COVID-19 is a dereliction of their duty,” Scalise and Comer continued.
The news comes as Fauci has been under heavy scrutiny after thousands of his emails from the early days of the pandemic were released to the public. The emails show that Fauci remained skeptical of the efficacy of masks and was aware of the possibility that the virus could have originated in a Chinese lab early last year.
Those revelations have caused some Republicans to call on Fauci to resign or be fired.
