The owner of California's In-N-Out burger chain, which has something of a cult following (I say this endearingly), has pointed to crime in Oakland as the cause for closing its location there.
Amazingly, this is the only store closure in the companyâs 75 year history. Having no closures over such a timeframe is, for lack of a better word, insane. Itâs a record no other major fast food chain in the nation can claim. While they obviously have far more locations, a behemoth like McDonalds didnât add any net locations for the eight years preceding 2022 (meaning there were hundreds of closures per year).
Like Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out promotes Christianity, and has the famous bible verse John 3:16 printed on their soda cups.
In an interview with PragerU, the companyâs President and owner Lynsi Snyder said âOut of 365 days, I think almost 300 days there was some type of event.â
âThere were car burglaries, violence, theft, there was a lot,â she said. âGun shots went through the store, stabbings⌠it was huge.â
âThe amount of time it would take for the police to get there was alarming,â she added.
âFor the safety of our associates, it was just not okay.â
The closure came after police logged 1,335 criminal incidents in its location since 2019 alone.
In an interview with SF Gate, In-N-Out's chief operating officer, Denny Warnick, said that
"Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our Customers and Associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies." He also highlighted the concerningly slow police response times.
In 2021, Oaklandâs City Council voted to defund the police to the tune of over $17 million. Despite liberals calling for defunding the police for being âracist,â the Oakland NAACP condemned the move; âFailed leadership, including the movement to defund the police, our District Attorneyâs unwillingness to charge and prosecute people who murder and commit life threatening serious crimes, and the proliferation of anti-police rhetoric have created a heyday for Oakland criminals. If there are no consequences for committing crime in Oakland, crime will continue to soar,â the NAACP wrote.
