In a surreal moment that could only happen in San Francisco (or any other cartoonishly progressive cities in America), current Mayor London Breed challenged the street cred of an opposing Democrat candidate by questioning whether or not he could name three drag queens.

"I’d like to ask Mark a question. You were at the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club and couldn’t name any LGBT advisers to your campaign. You were at the debate last week and couldn’t name any drag queens on your own,” Breed said to challenger Mark Farrell.  “I was wondering if you could - this is an opportunity to redeem yourself - if you could name three LGBTQ advisers for your campaign and three drag queens in San Francisco.” Mysteriously she alternates between LGBT and LGBTQ, and Farrell is happy to add to the acronym in his response.

Farrell wouldn’t dignify that question with a response to the drag queen question - but did embarrassingly use his time to pander to the LGBT/Q/Whatever community

“We’re not going to revise the drag queen question from last week. But what I will say is I’m incredibly proud of support that I have former LGBTQ+ community here in the San Francisco.” He then mentioned that two of his staff were members of whatever the “queer community” is, without naming them.

“But what I will do is stand by my record in supporting our queer community here in the city of San Francisco. When I was a member of the Board of Supervisors, as a straight white male, I was the one who authored legislation to make sure that same sex couples that work for the city of San Francisco, they were being taxed by our federal government for their health care benefits before same sex marriage was legalized,” Farrell said.

Watch the circus for yourself below:

Farrell was briefly the acting Mayor of San Francisco from January-June of 2018 after being appointed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to succeed then-acting mayor London Breed. This came following the death of Mayor Lee in December 2017 (Breed was initially appointed to replace him before the Board voted to remove her three weeks later). Farrell didn’t seek election in the special election in June to fill the remainder of Lee’s term, and Breed won that election.

In 2015, Farrell was fined nearly $200k by the San Francisco Ethics Commission for violating campaign finance laws. He refused to pay and the commission sent him to collections.

It’s alleged that in 2018 he collaborated with Aaron Peskin, the President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to get himself appointed acting mayor.

Later, in 2021, he wrote a letter to Napa Superior Court on “Mayor of San Francisco” letterhead requesting leniency for a “close personal friend” charged with domestic violence.”
