Jake Tapper Rips Gov. Cuomo’s Coronavirus “Victory Lap”
Finding any honest coverage of New York Governor’s handling of the coronavirus in the mainstream media is a challenge. While his state has been hardest hit by the virus, the media continued singing his praises throughout the chaos, eventually leading to Cuomo boasting the highest approval rating in his history as governor.
Appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America in mid-June, the interviewer gushed over Cuomo without a single mention of the nursing home scandal. “You’ve been commended for your clear and your calm leadership. People from all over the country and the world have tuned in to your press conferences” she said.
Over at CNN in late June, guest Juliette Kayyem criticized Florida’s handling of the virus, apparently unaware that New York had ten times as many deaths as Florida on a per-capita basis at the time of her appearance. Then she praised Cuomo. “For a long time, Governor Cuomo in New York I think has aggressively, even if belated, tried to fight the virus statewide. In other words, statewide rules that were trying to drill down, bring down the number, save the hospitals, and also have surge capacity.”
Cuomo also had the assistance of brother Fredo to sing his praises on that network.
CBS managed to gush over Cuomo more than his brother, proclaiming that Cuomo was “having a moment” – and informing the audience that he’s single in their reporting.
NBC’s Savannah Guthrie asked Cuomo about nursing homes “In retrospect, was that order a mistake? I know that guidance has since been changed,” to which Cuomo responded by lying that his state had a fewer percentage of people dying in nursing homes than other states with no push back.
There’s little honest coverage out there, but Cuomo’s free ride in the left-wing media is ending with Jake Tapper.
“New York’s Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo seems to be on something of a victory tour congratulating the state and himself for defeating the virus,” Tapper said, pointing out that Cuomo has even designed a bizarre poster to commemorate his conquering of coronavirus.
“There are no illustrations, however, of the more than 32,000 dead New Yorkers, the highest death toll by far of any state. No rendering on that poster of the criticism that Governor Cuomo ignored warnings, no depiction of the study that he could have saved thousands of lives had he and Mayor De Blasio acted sooner, no painting of his rescinded order that nursing homes take all infected patients in,” the CNN anchor continued.
Tapper accused Cuomo of “revisionism” and “crowing,” and also took to Twitter to share his disapproval.
“NY state has lost more than 32,000 lives to coronavirus. So while it’s great that the numbers have gone down, it’s perplexing to see crowing, Cuomo going on Fallon, etc. No other state has lost as many lives, not even close. New Jersey is next with 17,000+,” Tapper tweeted. “Yes, this has been a major challenge for every leader, but New York’s leaders do not have a success story to tell. It’s been about missteps and late actions.”
