It was only days ago that I wrote on White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s claim that DHS data would show illegal immigration down on the Biden Administration’s watch. Fiscal year 2022 ended with nearly 2.4 million migrant encounters at the border, nearly five times higher than the last FY with Trump in office, and the highest ever recorded. As I pointed out then, KJP’s statement could only possibly be true if she means illegal immigration is down from some prior high on their watch. The Biden administration often spins high gas prices this way, whereas if a gallon of gas increases from $2 to $4 on their watch and then falls to $3.50 they’ll take credit for a $0.50 drop.
Undeterred by implausibility, KJP decided to go one step further in the following days and claim that illegal immigration is actually down 90%. When pressed by Peter Doocy on how exactly she came to this conclusion given that CBP data shows 136,000 more border encounters so far this year than the previous, a visibly aggravated KJP tried to cut him off and then accused him of being dramatic.
She then tried to claim she was speaking about a “parolee program” that Biden put into place - and which did not, in fact, reduce illegal immigration by 90%.
