Justice Department Indicates That U.S. Seizure of Four Iranian Oil Tankers Was Largest of its Type in History
On Friday, the DOJ declared that the U.S.’s seizure of fuel shipments from Iran to Venezuela was the “largest ever,” and that it had taken all four vessels’ cargo, totaling 1.116 million barrels of petroleum.
According to Fox News, this was an interruption of a multimillion-dollar shipment by the foreign terrorist organization Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Investigators from both the FBI and Homeland Security, after acquiring warrants to seize the Iranian oil products, found that the vessels were all IRGC assets. Judge Jeb Boasberg of the D.C. Circuit Court then issued the seizure order.
Fox continued that the profits from these shipments are “allegedly intended to support terrorism and a ‘full range of nefarious activities.’” These activities varied from funding human rights abuses to buying weapons of mass destruction.
This news demonstrates how seriously the Trump administration takes the Iranian threat, and that, unlike the last administration, it will not appease the world’s largest state-sponsor of terrorism.
