Liz Cheney Ousted From GOP Leadership

In a move that we all knew was coming (and hoped for), Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney has just been ousted from the House GOP’s leadership.

According to Fox News:

House Republicans voted on Wednesday to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from leadership.

Cheney had lost support from fellow GOP leaders in recent weeks amid a public feud with former President Donald Trump.

She gave a defiant speech on the House floor Tuesday warning fellow Republicans that American democracy faces a threat it has “never seen before.”

Speaking to reporters after the ouster, she continued bashing Trump. When asked about him potentially running in 2024, she said she will do “everything I can to ensure the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office” before accusing him of continuing to “provoke.” Or in other words, she vows to never let him get as close to the Oval Office as she’ll get to another House leadership position.

It’s unclear who her replacement will be, but New York Rep. Elise Stefanik’s name has been floated the most. That unfortunately would only make matters worse, because ironically Cheney is actually more of a “Trump Republican” when it comes to her voting record than Stefanik is, despite their rhetoric on the former president being polar opposites. Cheney voted alongside Trump 92.9% of the time, while Stefanik voted alongside Trump 77.7% of the time.

While I’m no fan of Cheney, if the issue here is loyalty to the “new” GOP shaped by Trump, Republicans ought to find someone more aligned with that agenda than Stefanik. The overwhelming majority of Republican Reps sided with Trump on the issues over 90% of the time, so there are plenty of others to choose from.

Trump spoke out against Cheney at CPAC in February, urging his supporters to “get rid of her with the next election,” and that’s a strong probability unless the field becomes too crowded.  Cheney is underwater among voters in her home state of Wyoming, with 65% having a negative image of her for a net approval rating of -36%.
