Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene excoriated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo during a congressional hearing on Cuomo’s COVID nursing home scandal.

MTG slammed Cuomo for his decision to force nursing homes to take in patients who were recovering from COVID in March 2020; “The Comfort ship was sent to New York on March 30th of 2020. That was just a few days after you signed the directive to put COVID-19 patients into nursing homes on March 25th which led to the murdering [of] people’s parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.”

“Yes, murdering them,” she repeated.

Cuomo attempted to interject, but was shut down by MTG.

“You didn’t send them there, you put them in nursing homes, which is murder,” Greene said. “That’s murdering people.”

At the center of New York’s COVID disaster was Cuomo’s infamous “March 25 advisory” issued to nursing home administrators, directors of nursing, and hospital discharge planners. The supposed logic behind the order was that it would help free up space in the hospitals for seriously ill coronavirus patients (while those less severely affected by the virus could recover in other long-term care facilities, primarily nursing homes).

In a world where the coronavirus is most dangerous to the elderly, common sense would suggest against implementing such a policy, but common sense proved no match for New York liberalism in this case (a frequent occurrence).

As ProPublica noted in their June 16th, 2020 report slamming Cuomo’s policy: “In the weeks that followed the March 25 order, COVID-19 tore through New York state’s nursing facilities, killing more than 6,000 people — about 6% of its more than 100,000 nursing home residents.”  Meanwhile, the Republican County Executive of Rensselaer County rightly saw Cuomo’s advice as absurd and defied it. The only nursing home run by the county, Van Renssealaer, saw a total of zero coronavirus deaths.

It later turned out that even the 6,000 death toll was an underestimate, as unlike every other state, Cuomo’s New York was only counting nursing home deaths as such if they died on nursing home property - and excluded nursing home patients transported to hospitals who died there. At this time nationwide, data from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that of the 43 states that have detailed nursing home data, resident deaths were making up 44% of total COVID deaths in their states. If this proportion held true for New York, it would  imply over 11,000 nursing home deaths attributable to Cuomo.
