Mitch McConnell rather famously ripped Donald Trump at his 2nd impeachment hearing and Trump responded with a scalding blast email trashing McConnell. However, when McConnell was asked by Bret Baier on Fox News about the possibility of Trump being the nominee in 2024, his answers may have surprised some people.

…Bret Baier asked McConnell if he believed Trump would be the GOP nominee during the next president election as some have predicted.

“Well, there’s a lot to happen between now and ’24,” the GOP leader responded. “I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president, plus some governors and others.”

“There’s no incumbent,” he continued, telling Baier it “should be a wide open race and fun for you all to cover.”

Baier then asked directly, “If [Trump] was the party’s nominee, would you support him?”

“The nominee of the party? Absolutely,” McConnell replied.

Quite clearly, Trump and McConnell hate each other, but McConnell is still the leader of the Senate. If the Republican Party nominates Donald Trump in 2024, McConnell really wouldn’t have an option other than to quit or support Trump. You can’t have the man leading the Senate openly trying to sandbag his party’s nominee. Would he try to sabotage Trump’s candidacy? In the primaries, yes, but in the general election, probably not. That being said, McConnell also wouldn’t do anything more than the bare minimum to help Trump get elected. He’d just put his head down, work on keeping the Senate red and bad mouth Trump behind the scenes, while Trump would probably return the favor publicly. None of it would be good for the Republican Party, but there’s probably no fixing the broken relationship between Trump and McConnell at this point.
