The Department of Education is now sending correction emails after incorrectly telling nine million applicants that they had been approved for Joe Bidenās student debt bailout, which is now held up in the courts.
In amazingly ācoincidentalā timing, a judge first struck down Bidenās bailout just days after the November midterm elections - effectively allowing Biden to ābuyā youth votes with the promise of student debt forgiveness - without actually spending a dime.
Ultimately, the SCOTUS will be deciding the fate of the bailout, and is expected to end it. While if/when that does happen itāll be blamed on the courtās conservative majority in the media, even Speaker Nancy Pelosi had to explain to reporters at a news conference in July 2021 that āPeople think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.ā
And it seems like borrowers are going to learn that firsthand.
According to ABC:
The Department of Education sent an email to some 9 million federal student loan borrowers correcting an erroneous announcement sent three weeks ago about the status of pending debt forgiveness.
Just before Thanksgiving, those borrowers, who applied for student debt relief from the federal government, got an email from the Department of Education with a subject line indicating their application had been "approved," according to a copy of the email obtained by ABC News.
The [follow up] email explained as much in the email body, informing borrowers that "lawsuits are preventing the Department of Education from implementing its one-time student loan debt relief program."
Of note, the initial email notifying them of forgiveness went out after the program had already been blocked by the courts. Isnāt it great that āthe adultsā are back in charge?
