An attempted confrontation went awry when Democrat Representative Cori Bush quoted the witness as saying something they never actually said.
During the Wednesday hearing with former top Twitter executives James Baker, Vijaya Gadde, Yoel Roth and Anika Collier Navaroli, most of the headlines were made by Republicans grilling them for censoring conservative voices, the Hunter Biden laptop story, and colluding with the Biden administration. Despite the obvious far-left bias on the social network before its ownership changed to Elon Musk, some Democrats were upset that the platform wasn’t left-wing enough.
Bush attempted to grill Gadde for not doing enough in the wake of January 6th, an event Twitter used as an excuse to permanently suspend a sitting president, asking her “Miss Gadde. You were at Twitter on January 6th and repeatedly asked for a prospective meeting to discuss what happened in the lead up to that day. Management told you it, quote, ‘wasn’t a priority for the company.’ Why wasn’t it a priority for Twitter to learn the lessons from January 6th?”
But as it turned out, the quote was either misattributed or made up. Gadde responded, “I don’t believe you’re referring to me. I’m the Chief Legal Officer. I did not make that statement,” leading to visible confusion from Bush, who turned to an aide for help.
