According to a French fire official, Notre Dame Cathedral’s main structure has been “saved from total destruction” after a massive fire burned through the historic landmark in Paris.
Paris fire commander Jean-Claude Gallet told AP, “We can consider that the main structure of Notre-Dame has been saved and preserved.”
French President Emmanuel Macron said the “worst has been avoided” in the Notre Dame fire and vowed to rebuild the cathedral.
“We will rebuild it, all together,” he said. “Tomorrow a national campaign to raise funds will be launched, and well beyond our borders.”

Earlier this afternoon the spire of the cathedral had fallen and the flames had spread to one of the iconic rectangular towers. Firefighters at the scene had been tasked with saving the artwork stored at the back of the cathedral.
According to reports, at least one firefighter has been seriously injured.
